I actually enjoyed this one much more than the previous books in the series, even if the denouement is a bit drawn out and self-indulgent.

Enjoyed it while reading, but less than 2 weeks after finishing I’ve already forgotten the plot.

This is a pretty intense book. What seems like a simple country house party with a beautiful woman ensnaring a husband also contains a pretty dark story about Elissande's uncle and family. Sherry Thomas writes amazingly well, evoking a lot of despair and emotion for Elissande, which she hides under her beauty and stunning smiles. I really enjoyed the secondary romance and Lord Vere's antics, as well as when Elissande catches on to him and begins to play along. I would say the main thing holding this story back is that the villain's motivations were a little simplistic.

Some small moments of second hand embarrassment
Reread on audio and am bumping it up to five stars. How Sherry makes me root for characters who are so manipulative and cruel to each other is beyond me, but she does it basically every time. Capri!!!! I cried.
Overall it was fine. However I was getting annoyed at how long his “I’m dumb” act was going on when it was just them together. I also thought at times I was being introduced to too many side characters that I couldn’t keep up with. Not to mention his brothers story was really shoe horned in there. It wasn’t a bad one but would have been served better as a novella. I was here for the main couple.
A pretty disappointing read from the author of the charming "Private Arrangements" about a society marriage that is not what it seems.
Any time I can imagine the love interest being played by Cary Grant, I'm gonna like it. I think the premise of this one sounds a little dumb, and it does have some cringe aspects to it. But the best parts for me are when Penny is his true self with Elisande because he's so dour and stormy. I guess you'd call that brooding but it's his anger that I enjoyed the most. He's so angry at the whole situation and being stuck with this conniving wife that actually he can't resist. And it all comes out right, as it should.
The plot is too contrived for me.
Chemistry shines when Vere dropped his idiot persona, unfortunately these scenes are few & far between.
The pacing puts me off a bit -- I thought the bits about Freddie and Angelica breaks the flow too much.
