I loved this so much. It was a serious story but had a surprising number of laugh out loud moments. Love ST.

I've read better historical romances. This one never really drew me in. I've read better "marriage of convenience" stories. I didn't care about the characters and I didn't find the story very romantic.

I just wasn't impressed. I'd definitely recommend Judith McNaught, Lisa Kleypas or Jude Deveraux over this.

Probably more of a 3.5 for me, I really enjoy her books, but this one wasn't quite as good as the previous two I've read. Something about the villain/revelation at the end just irked me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Free on Audible! It’s clever AND ridiculous. It’s funny AND twisty. What a surprise.

It barely has a spice level of

Don't think *too* too hard about the plot (as with most in this genre), but I liked it! Different kind of trope to have the main characters both pretending to be more dimwitted/more amiable than they actually are. I liked the main characters and was rooting for them.

Elissande Edgerton spends her days caring for her aunt and at the mercy of her uncle. A mishap with a room full of rats brings a nearby house party to her doorstep, including the handsome, if bumbling, Lord Vere. Elissande needs a way out, and so she determines she'll marry the marquess. When he doesn't fall prey to her advances, she traps him into a compromising situation, and they are forced to marry. The question is, will Vere be a weight around her neck or her biggest ally in her quest for freedom.

I've heard people say before that this is Sherry's idea of a romantic comedy, and that expectation held up throughout. Everyone is a little devious and not a single character is telling the whole truth. Even when the characters are cruel to one another (signature Sherry Thomas), the tone somehow remains light. This doesn't take away from the overall angst of the romance, which is still present with main characters who love one another but have created their own gulf between one another.

There were a couple close calls where I was concerned about where this was going but Sherry Thomas delivered!
