Hate To Want You - The Donnellys of Dogwood Cove Book #2 - Review

Couple: Dr. Heidi Morgan & Dr. Max Donnelly

Author: Julia Jarrett

Tropes: steamy small town, enemies-to-lovers, medical romance, frenemy to lover

Review: Heidi and Max…two star-crossed lovers who find each other after a long time. We begin this book in the past, we see the beginning of Max’s loathing for Heidi about her supposed fiancé. I felt like having a snipet of the backstory made the read more enjoyable and intriguing.

Max. Oh man, as the oldest Donnelly he is feeling the pressure to settle down from all sides. His angst and hurt about Heidi make this romance soooo good! I enjoyed his POV and his struggle to learn how to work with someone he assumed was married to his enemy. I also felt like we learn a lot about him and the Donnelly past in his chapters. His poor communication creates the arc in this book since he does not ask Heidi about her marriage…or supposed marriage and he hates his attraction for her.

Heidi is a resident who is trying to make a name for herself in medicine. I loved her inner beauty and the way she dealt with Max. Her character was posted and written so well that it pulled you in right away. I also liked her journey of getting over her ex. The way she pushes at Max to communicate and open up to her is also well done.

The push-pull between them created so much tension and angst that the spice later on was explosive! Overall, I loved this book and am excited to read about Jude next!

Rating: 8/10, oooh the tension!

I loved this story so much! I love the growth in both Max and Heidi. I love how you get glimpses of the other dogwood cove relationships. I also love how it touched on some very real issues that healthcare workers face.

I can’t wait to read about Jude!

Oh Gosh, the angst in this book is fantastic. I felt the tension and chemistry between Heidi and Max coming off the pages. This is an enemies-to-lovers, workplace romance set in a Healthcare setting that is sweet and swoony and it's not going to disappoint. Heidi is training under Max to finish her residency to become a pediatric doctor and any romantic relationship is forbidden.
I highly recommend reading this book. This is my favorite book written by the so far.
This book is so so good. I couldn't put it down.

This was such a sweet, steamy, enthusiastic enemies to lovers romance.

Sometimes life has to knock you upside the backside before things can fall into place. Heidi Morgan has played the second fiddle most of her life. Whatever her ex wanted she followed along. It took a young girl to show her that things had to change. She finally kicked him to the curb.

Now she's back to complete her residency at the one hospital that always felt like home. Only, some of the staff isn't as welcoming as she remembered. Namely, the hottie Dr. Max Donnely she's been assigned to.

Max remembers meeting her the day of her going away party. When her boyfriend showed up to get her, all the nightmares of his past resurface. Good riddance to her and the one responsible for ruining his family’s life. Then she returns to the hospital as a resident, and why would God torment him by assigning him as her Attending...

These two stubborn adults find that passion and animosity walk a fine line. The sparks between them lead to some excellent reading. I really enjoyed it and recommend it for those who like a lighter enemies to lovers romance.

I've never been a fan of "big misunderstanding" plots, and in a way, that's what we have here. However, it's a misunderstanding with a twist, as well as a symptom of a larger problem that main character Max Donnelly needed to work through. He'd been bottling up a lot of feelings for a long time, and it wasn't until nurse-turned-pediatrician Heidi Morgan returned to Vancouver Island to complete her residency that he was finally forced to face them. I really felt for everything he and his family had been through, though I wish he hadn't taken so many of his frustrations out on Heidi, who had no idea why normally kind-hearted Max was so cold to her. Fortunately, his attitude changed when he learned the truth, and I really liked them together. They still had to overcome the challenges of working together, but I was rooting for them the whole way.

Heidi had some baggage too, mostly related to her ex, but she'd already worked through a lot of it by the time the story began. I loved that she recognized her own worth and didn't allow the negative beliefs created by her ex to creep back in. I also liked that she stood up to Max, even in the beginning when he was his grumpiest towards her, and that she was never afraid to tell him what she thought. He may have been her supervisor, but Heidi made Max see her as an equal.

In addition to Max and Heidi's relationship, I enjoyed Max's interactions with his brothers in this story. I'm really looking forward to more of that dynamic in future books.

I highly recommend "Hate to Want You" for all contemporary/small town romance fans and can't wait to get my hands on the next book of the series.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this ARC from Literally Yours PR. This is the second book of The Donnellys of Dogwood Cove series I’ve received from them and I’m absolutely loving it.

Heidi and Max. There’s so much tension in their story. Max dislikes Heidi because of her ex, and Heidi can’t understand why he’s nice to everyone but her. They both want each other and take awhile to get to where they give into their attraction. With Max’s brothers’ help he does his best to figure out how to be the man Heidi deserves and needs.

I loved their story. I can’t get enough of the Donnelly brothers.

Hate To Want You (The Donnellys of Dogwood Cove #2) - Julia Jarrett

5 Stars!!

"Julia Jarrett hit it out of the park with Hate to Want You, this sequel is invaluable, it is a must read addition to the entire Donnellys of Dogwood Cove Series"

Heidi and Max are co-workers together again at the hospital, she's his subordinate and everything that's off limits. Max is mentoring Heidi but it’s not for long before she brings up his past and slips into his heart.

I love a man who shows his devilish tongue in the bedroom and Max brings it!! I found the love story between Heidi and Max to be animated with so much passion, desire, and longing I really felt it through the whole working dynamic between the two of them. What I enjoyed seeing the most in Hate To Want You was including the entire Donnelly family which is filled with all the small town, close knit, family feels and the sibling behavior especially between the brothers (Sawyer) was such a kick and a humorous twist that made it relatable for myself who grow up with a close, no topic is off the table family.

I cannot wait to read about Jude and the rest of the brothers. Julia is gifted with bringing me fictional men I can never forget and Max is top tier!

Dual POV:

I will be honest, the miscommunication trope is one of my least favorites. But it is resolved rather quickly in this book. I really enjoyed Max and Heidi's story.

The angst throughout this one is on point. Both characters have a lot of growth, which I love to see. I loved the whole family dynamic and how we got to see characters from past books, as well as those that are getting books.

With that being said, I cannot wait for the next book. Thank you to Julia for this ARC.
