Being the first volume collecting Waid’s run on the Flash, it collects both his stories from various specials and annuals as well as the start of his run on volume two of the Flash proper. Great start but just a beginning to a great run of 90s comics.

Waid is a solid enough writer, and even as a non D.C. fan I enjoyed a couple of the early bits of this, but it really does demonstrate the nadir of the big two publishers in the late eighties and early nineties, with talented artists trying to draw “zany cool villains” that just look awful and incredibly dated. But not as dated as the terrible final story, where Waid’s fine writing just becomes unreadable because of gritty cross hatching hell. The cover should have warned me - goofy lightness with the chest punched out by the Flash looking like he’s been caught short and can’t find a near enough toilet and is really livid about it

Definitely a product of the '90s and you can see glimpses of the writer that Mark Waid was going to become. However, if you didn't read '90s comics (or just don't enjoy them), this may not be for you. As a Waid fan, I'm still interested enough to read the next volume, though.
