I want to like this book, but it was just so boring. I would stick around long enough to find something interesting, only to be bored again 30 pages later waiting for something to happen. A lot of telling, rather than showing, in the writing.
Way too long winded for the story it contained. The story had promise, but ultimately felt that it fell flat at the end. No real 'reward' or sudden twist at the end for the reader. The last 20% of the book, rather than being a climax of events and conclusion...was more of an epilogue, including a big time skip.

Breezy and comic book like. I didn't really feel invested in the characters but the plot was fast-moving enough to keep me page-turning.

I’ve read a decent amount of vampire books; salems lot, Dracula, dracul, I Am Legend, twilight(?), etc, but I don’t think I’ve read one where there’s a vampire who has discovered a cure for their “red thirst” - so that was a very interesting component of this story. At first I thought it was set in antebellum south for no real reason, but as the story develops, it becomes clear it wouldnt have worked any other way — still, I am always hesitant when white authors are using the ‘n’-word…
I loved the steamboat information and the world of the Mississippi River, and it works very well for this type of gruesome vampire story.
