DNF at about 50%. The premise is SO compelling and the book starts off incredibly strong. It really grabbed me in the beginning and does well to put you into the shoes of the MC. It sets up the start of what could be an incredibly wild adventure.

I love LOVED the bits of werewolf lore, but I feel like the way it was being presented to me wasn't serving the story. It was kind of like reading a menu at the start of a game instead of the game teaching you to play. "This is this way simply because it is."

For the most part, this rating doesn't come from an entirely negative place. I don't think this book is poorly written, but it's not written in a format that's working for me as a reader. It's sort of "episodic" and disconnected, and it makes it incredibly difficult to follow. On top of that, I don't think this one is strongly "plot" driven, which makes the writing seem even MORE aimless. Some readers may respond well to this, but I'm just not one of them.

This is craftsmanship at its finest. No notes, I even cried.

Phenomenal story about wanting to belong, family, and coming into one's own.... Oh, and a masterful re-tooling of werewolf mythology. I loved the way it was written. I loved how the story moved through time (and the reason for it). I loved that everything did not instantly make sense to me and I had to re-read some passages and process what was being said. I'll definitely be reading other works by Stephen Graham Jones.

This is a story about a family living at the fringes whose love for each other is palpable on every page. I knew nothing about werewolves, yet the lore here pushed them near the top of my monster list.

I said before that I'm officially on the SGJ train. I didn't think that could be more cemented but HERE WE ARE. Mongrels was just so so so beautifully written. So much so. Not even giving the narrator a name from the get go was brilliant. The trek back and forth in time and space was brilliant. The final scene was BRILLIANT. I'm so entertained and already have my next SGJ book lined up!

Soooo good. Was not expecting this book to be as good as it was considering it’s a werewolf book but man, this was great.
