An excellent coming of age tale of a young boy growing up in a nomadic werewolf family in America. It alternates voice by telling us the story in first person through the eyes of the young boy and through a narrator's voice that goes back in time and gives us a different perspective on situations in the boy's life.

I like the way SGJ wrote this. It's written like an extended thought.

I liked the characters, the lore of werewolves, and the ending most of all. Wasn't what I was expecting but it was so good

A good addition to werewolf literature; I like that modern werewolf stories tend to wrestle with family dynamics and this is no exception. We’re right beside the narrator as he struggles with identity and his role in the pack. Well done story work!

Rounded up from 4.5. This is a story about a family on the margins - fighting hard to survive, loving each other fiercely and always running. They’re on the margins because they’re werewolves, but it rang so true for all the reasons people are on the margins - poverty, addiction, trauma…. Really this is a coming of age story for the unnamed narrator.

Good werewolf book: "Mongrels" by Stephen Graham Jones.
Better werewolf book: "Sharp Teeth" by Toby Barlow.

One thing about me is that if SGJ writes it, I'm gonna read it. I could read his grocery list and I would probably enjoy it. Mongrels was a werewolf story quite unlike any you've read before. I wish I could summarize how much I love this book, but I can't do it justice. All I can tell you is to READ IT. You won't regret it.
