I’m an Adam Grant stan, so I don’t think I could ever give him anything less than 5 stars. This book should be required reading for so many situations, including enrolling in grad school. The layers of humility in this book reassure the reader that it’s actually ok to not know or to be wrong. It’s incredibly freeing but also revelatory. There were plenty of visuals to help reinforce his ideas and I think about them often. Overall this book is packed with enough research and anecdotes that the reader can use it as a reference for problem solving and second-guessing.

While reading this, I had a hard time putting my finger on what about it was not clicking with me. I’ve come to realize that the biggest reason is that this reads like a Ted talk; the kind that pairs perfectly with uplifting inspirational instrumental ballads in the background.

For how much he talks about thinking like a scientist, Adam doesn’t write like one in this. He writes like a motivational speaker. As someone who is an engineer, and thinks in such a fashion, there was a disconnect for me very quickly into the book. A lot of his points boiled down to “why”/“why not” and not “how” (which again is ironic because that’s another big point of his in the book)

This book wasn’t what I thought it was going to be and thus my dissatisfaction is largely my fault. I had expected something along the lines of Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman where I would get a deep-dive into the science of rethinking and knowing what we don’t know. That’s not really what this book is.

Ultimately, I’ve settled on three stars because I learnt new things which I always enjoy and it’s an okay book.

Everyone should read this at least once in their life. That's all I have to say.
