This book was objectively great, it just didn't quite hit the spot for me. I think I found it a bit stilted at times. Although I enjoyed getting to know the characters, there wasn't always much difference between their voices.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an early copy!

This was a really fun and sweet story. I love stories with a short setting, and this book was set over the course of one workday. The cast of characters was really fleshed out and diverse.

A boy finds out his beloved workplace, an indie bookstore, is due to close, and in trying to fix it, he makes it worse really fast. So begins a day filled with spilled secrets and frantic plans between the two boys that work there, but especially between the three girls. This book is beautifully girl-centered. Angry girls, hurting girls, perfect-but-not-perfect girls. Each of the three girls go through character development from different starting points so I think there will be many readers who relate to at least one of them.

There were just a time or two where the social awareness felt a little forced, but for the most part this book’s lessons are taught naturally and flowed well with the plot.

This book had that movie-like feel where almost every scene was outlandish and things went way left instead of going right. But it was fun to follow and had lots of humor and heart.

Content warnings for depression and suicidal thoughts and on-page sexual harassment.

Have I watched the film that this book is based off? no. So I mean I wasn’t disappointed in the same way other reviewers might have been. If you want a light, easy going contemporary read about people trying to save a bookstore they work in well this is for you. I enjoyed it, I thought it was cute. It probably could have been more and the relationships more developed but it was likeable.

Cute, quick read set entirely in one day. It was a fun book overall, even if it was more lighthearted/“shallow.” I appreciated the ways that each of the three protagonists confronted their struggles, though I do feel like everything was resolved pretty easily (of course it was—it all has to happen in one day).

This was a pretty fast moving book with things happening one after another and switching from one person to another all in a 24 hour span of time. The stakes are high and there are quite a few humorous and dramatic moments. A lot of it seemed a little too unbelievable, but that can be overlooked in rom-coms, but it was distracting me a bit. I was also bothered a little by how one of the characters was putting down another about her depression. It was handled better with another character, but still, it felt off and I'm not sure how it would read for someone dealing with it.

It would work for someone looking for a light read especially if they like bookstore settings.

While the book could be slow sometimes it was still a really good story at heart.

Rebel Dainelle, sunshiney Rinn, and sullen Imogen may not have much in common, but when they learn that their bookstore is going under, they all cope and plot in different ways to save it. Of course, chaos ensues.

I highly relate to having to work with a person, but not wanting to know more about them, especially if they rub me off the wrong way. In some jobs, you just know you’re there for a paycheck, nothing more. Yet despite the great differences between these girls, they do all have one thing in common: a love for the bookstore and reading which shows up in their own way. And it’s also their differences that help them work together to try to save the store.

And god, this book really captures the annoying customer moments.

After reading this book, I’ve been trying to be more friendly to my customers and coworkers, since well you don’t know what everyone is going through or goes on in their heads. I’m more of a shy person, so I still struggle at times, but I’ll try to get better.

All in all, a great book to curl up to and watch three almost strangers become allies and then good friends. I do question how come so many of the characters are underage and why one of them is left alone to close the store and then accidentally kickstart the plot, but well you’ve got to start the story somehow.

Happy Reading!

One of the better contemporary YAs that I’ve read, but I may be biased because I really love a bookish setting. Downgraded to a 4 star because sometimes the teenage angst was a little too much for me (I’m looking at you, Danny), but I did feel like Rinn and Imogen’s struggles with anxiety and depression (respectively) were accurate (if maybe a little overwritten). All in all, a pretty good reading experience.
