The third in the series. It continues the story of Esme and Sebastian from the previous book as well as Rhys and Helene, and some returning minor characters and references.

Big age difference between the main love interests which I never like but at least she isn’t a virgin debutante.

Half the book is spent on Esme and Sebastian, with Sebastian trying to convince Esme to marry him while Esme is trying to live a respectable life now due to her promise to her late husband. It’s a role reversal from where they started and sweet to see Sebastian so devoted to her. It is a little depressing to see the flamboyant Esme seeming to struggle with self worth.

The main plot is a three-way love interest. Esme’s aunt invites Stephen to her house, which would never happen during confinement but let’s ignore that. Her aunt thinks Stephen would be a good marriage choice for Esme. Esme thinks he would be a good choice for a lover for Helene, who needs to commit adultery to get a divorce from her terrible husband. Meanwhile Stephen finds himself drawn to Beatrix, even though she represents the opposite of the prim and proper way he lives his life.

Esme ends up declaring herself engaged to Stephen, in a panicked way of avoiding her feelings for Sebastian. Stephen goes along with it because it makes Beatrix jealous. He also lets Helene pretend that they are lovers, after she cannot go through with the act in fact, and doesn’t tell Beatrix the truth. And somehow with Beatrix thinking he is engaged to one women, while taking another as a lover under her roof, while also kissing Beatrix, is a recipe for romance.

It’s a convoluted plot that is only interesting as part of the series.

Quite a few full spice scenes, but while foreplay is long and descriptive, the actual act is vague and short.

I’m so glad Esme and Sebastian finally got there happily ever after. I didn’t care so much about Stephen and Beatrix though

This book is brilliant, a breath of fresh air.
James' writing is impeccable, the fact that the novel follows different storylines in such an entertaining way is remarkable. You never get bored, the characters are deep and there is actual character growth along the story.
Amongst all the same, repetitive, trope-filled romance space, this book completely stands out
lighthearted

Actual rating: 2.5/5 but rounded down to 2/5

Not my favorite. Sort of all over the place. What I think was supposed to be the "main" plot line was sort if boring. But, you know, even a bad-ish Eloisa James is still an Eloisa James!
