This book started at an incredibly high level of excitement. Then, even though I don't think it ever reached that same height again, it maintained a consistent "ooh, this is good" all the way to the end. But it was abrupt, that ending.
Every time I put the book down I was eager to get back to it, and never once did I wonder how many pages til the end. Really, that story could have gone in a hundred different directions from that beginning, that world was interesting and could spoke out into a lot of new equally interesting stories. I suppose it's good when the worst I can say for a book is that it needed to go on a bit longer. It did feel like he had some time limit and when the alarm went off he just wrapped it up and stuck "The End" on there.
As soon as I finish typing this I'm off to see what other Hugh Howey books are available. I've only read "Wool" and this one, and enjoyed both enough that I'll eagerly start another one.

I didn’t want to stop listening, and I felt super drawn in. Howey’s writing has so much depth and beauty to it. This book is interesting because I don’t necessarily feel highly emotionally connected to the characters, but I’m extremely invested in the journey. It almost felt like I was watching found footage, if that makes sense. I will say, the mother-daughter dynamic toward the end did get to me. All in all, I’m interested in this world, watching the characters from a distance, and sucked in by Howey’s writing style.
Had me turning pages to see what happens next. Not as good as wool but still held my interest well. Well written with developed characters, as expected from Howey.

I picked this sweet little book up just after I finished the Sylo trilogy and couldn’t get into it. A year or so later and I just devoured it! Such a lovely imagination this author has, and something tenderhearted about his work, despite it being post-apocalyptic.
Really a lovely book.
