This was my favorite Sequoyah nominated book for 2019. I loved this story of the horse that was adopted by a marine and became beloved and fought alongside his team. The pictures are gorgeous, too.

This 2020 Bluestem nominee was shockingly sweet. Horse lovers will love this book, as well as those interested in history or the military. I adored Reckless and her voracious appetite!

This was a very cute story with fantastic illustrations. I was engaged. I was excited. I couldn’t put the book down. I laughed at the descriptions of her eating things because a 2,000 pound horse WILL eat all day and will eat almost anything they encounter, even if it’s not good for them. However, this is a non-fiction book but it’s short on important facts. No dates, no specific locations, very few names. I would recommend this as a fun story but don’t expect the kiddos to actually learn much.

Love to read inspiring animal stories. Enjoy how this is laid out almost as if it's a scrapbook some rich realistic illustrations.

Nominated for the 2019 Washington children's choice award

It was fun to read this to the students. They had a lot of questions about the Korean War. I wanted to just show them MASH episodes. There is an opportunity to do math when they talk about how many trips Reckless took and how many pounds she carried. Also opportunities to talk about research as there is a bibliography at the end. It was a good book for Veteran's day.

I love when real story books make the best story books. The kids were delighted with the real horse's antics and the illustrations were excellent and emotive. Kids insisted I read all the bio info in the back and was happy to find that was even compelling.

I read this book to my 4th grade classes to promote the SC Book Awards and they loved it! It was the perfect balance of funny and intense and provided so many great discussion points, from socks on horses to cease-fire to primary sources and interviews. This has been my favorite read aloud so far this year.
