I really enjoyed the Young Avengers when I read their arc during Marvel's Civil War, and I found that reading their story from the beginning was wonderfully entertaining and worthwhile. The idea sounds horrible--it's about a bunch of (what looks like) teenage sidekicks who show similar powers and costumes to the recently disbanded Avengers. However, as this volume goes on, we learn more about the true nature of each of their powers and how they connect to the Avengers team. I also really enjoyed the running fear that their parents will find out. This volume is just an introduction to their story, and I'm very excited to read all about their journeys.

For: fans of superheroes/comics; readers wanting an original storyline that they can keep up with; readers wanting younger heroes to follow (they're quoted from 14-16 here).

Possible red flags: characters in peril; violence; language; blood; death; hostage situations.

Meh. I didn't really find myself invested in any of the characters. And any time Captain America shows up and says he's calling someone's parents (and not in a "your mom" joke kinda way) I lose interest. I guess that's what you get with teenage superheros, but it still seemed goofy to me.

2015 review:

I have never really been into comics, but I have wanted to get into them recently, and the Young Avengers seemed to be the only relatively easy place to start.

It was worth it. I love these kids. I'm gonna read all the comics the Young Avengers have ever featured in.

I just found a new favorite comic series.

I've been hearing about Young Avengers for quite some time and was finally able to purchase volume one. In just six issues, I already care deeply about the characters and eagerly look forward to more adventures.

I was erring on the side of 4.5* but I think as my first foray into comic book/ graphic novels it was solid. The storyline was emotional for such a short book and I was invested in the characters despite not having solid scenes of them just sitting and talking. It was just action, action and more action and I loved it. I mean I finished it in one sitting. Just have to wait for the vol 2 to get here then I'll probably marathon them both...

A decent opening arc, one that's got some fun potential for future stories. Cheung's art is gorgeous, and Heinberg's writing snaps along nicely.
