Loved the idea and the dialogue is always top notch. Found it too expository overall, especially some of the details in the games, so pulled points for that.

Not the usual Grisham read. Inspirational story of a young South Sudanese basketball hoping to immigrate to the USA and play basketball. The book took an unexpected direction and ended well.

Very disappointing. Samuel Sooleyman plays basketball on a dirt court in South Sudan. He gets a once in a lifetime chance to come to the United States to play ball with the big boys. It's an interesting look at how some of the players we see from overseas get on American teams and how much better they do the younger they are when they start competitive sports in the US. But the play by plays were incomprehensible and totally boring for me. I will stick to his law stories in the future.

Did not anticipate tearing up over a book about basketball but here I am

While a good story, the prerequisite to this book is a knowledge or at least a liking of basketball.

This is the story of a South Sudan 18 year old boy who makes a under 18 tournament team and has the chance to compete in the US. Based on a gut feel, his coach talks an old friend who is the coach of a predominantly black college to take a chance on Samuel Sooleyman and offer him a scholarship. The story and Sooley grows from there.

A good read, but it felt like Grisham just kind of got tired of writing at the end, and it abruptly stopped.

I was really surprised by this book - in a great way! I listened to the audio book and it was not at all what I was expecting. What a beautiful story!! I am normally a thriller and murder kind of reader. This was not that and was amazing! I recommend this to anyone. I am not into sports but the way it was presented in this book was magical.

A great read, basketball fan or not.

Grisham follows his love of sports with a book about a basketball player from Sudan. Interesting story with a tragic ending.

Love John Grisham in general but didn’t love this one. Won’t spoil it but the abruptness of the ending didn’t seem to coordinate with the tremendous detail in the beginning. Oh well
