The first half was better, then it veered away from the inner thinking of the immigrant and in to a simplistic, unrealistic basketball fanfic.
Oh man. I couldn't wait for this book to end. Not that it was poorly written, but it was soooo long.
When I was halfway through the book, I still couldn't believe nothing really happened. The story was just 'there'; this happened, then this, then this. It just told the story. Pretty simple.
Grisham is a great writer and the writing flowed but there was so much excess.
It was a good book, but it could've been reduced by half and still made the point.

It was a pretty good, light, fast read until the main character started acting completely out-of-character. Grisham seems to have thought he needed to wrap up this book quickly, but this ending just was not appropriate for the rest of the book. Pity….
I love Grisham. I love college basketball ( though the story is compelling even if you don’t). I am not going to write a spoiler but I wish it ended differently. It would have been 5 stars but I didn’t like the ending and can think of a plethora of different ways to end the story. But I am not Grisham so armchair writing is just that…
4,5 ⭐️. Nunca había leído a John Grisham, y la verdad es que me impresionó mucho. Me encantó la historia de Sooley y lo que el libro me hizo sentir.
But for the shot to the reader’s solar plexus near the end of the book, his book would rate 5 stars. With well-drawn, immensely likable characters, a plot that has you cheering for the hero, and crying for the terrible conditions from which the hero escaped, what’s not to like?
But to betray the reader by killing off the main character in such a horrible, senseless way is almost unforgivable, and felt like a cheap tug on the reader’s heartstrings in an attempt to finish writing the story. Grisham can, and should, do better.

3.5/5 stars.
The book was pretty good for the most part. I enjoyed the other sports novels that Grisham wrote and I enjoyed Sooley until Sooley's team reached the NCAA tournament. Sooley's team was a 16 seed and they made it all the way to the Final Four. As a basketball fan I have never seen this happen as it is rare that a 16 seed gets out of the first round (it's happened once in my lifetime). With my novels even though they are fiction I need a bit of believability in them.
