Fantastically creepy gothic horror set in and after World War I. Baltimore, a wounded soldier, unwittingly awakens ancient evil and sets it loose on Europe. A plague follows the war, turning its victims into vampires. This main story serves as a framing device for the horrific tales of Baltimore's three friends, who are summoned to a namesless city in order to witness the final battle between him and his nemesis.

I love the pace and structure of this book. If it weren't for homework and borderline exhaustion, I'd have read it in a single sitting. A truly great installment from Mignola and Golden.
