Gerade die erste Hälfte, in der es noch vor allem um das Leben in der DDR ging, fand ich sehr spannend. Allerdings hat es sich danach weiter und weiter gestreckt. Es war sich auch nicht sicher ob es unterhalten oder informieren will. Für Unterhaltungsliteratur war es streckenweise sehr langatmig (obwohl es sich bemüht hat einige Themen so schnell wie möglich abzuarbeiten), allerdings war es an vielen Stellen auch bei weitem zu oberflächlich um wirklich informativ zu sein. Angela Merkel hat es aber geschafft die meisten ihrer Entscheidungen in ihrer Kanzlerschaft in diesem Buch genauer zu erläutern und schreckt auch nicht davor zurück einige zuvor getroffene Aussagen kritisch zu betrachten.

The audio book is close to 30 hours, so prepare yourself. It was a good listen, but it was a LONG listen, which isn't for everyone. If you were interested in a particular issue though, you could most definitely go ahead and just listen to that section.
Merkle is not someone that I think I would agree with politically, and not someone I would likely vote for, however I truly did learn a lot from this memoir. Listening to her experiences in East Germany were eye opening. I was also captivated by Merkle's recounting of her experiences with Putin. I appreciate that she could be critical of her past decisions and was able to identify moments of flaw.
I do wish that there had been a short explanation of how the politics of Germany works, to more swiftly orient the non-German reader.

The first 3rd is great. But the rest is just a nostalgia trip. I recommend the start. The rest you can just move on from.

I have so much respect for Dr Merkel and her principled stand for welcoming refugees ("We can do this!"), which is why I read this book. But the other reviewers are right: this book is boring, especially if you don't know much about German politics. Part of the reason it's boring, however, is because it's not a sensational account where Merkel settles scores and rips into people. The most interesting bits were about her interactions with world leaders.
I listened to the audiobook. Somehow I lost the 10 or so highlights I made in Libby, sadly, and this is not a book I'll be skimming back over. I heard about the book when the BBC interviewed Merkel.

Ein sehr langes Buch, da Merkel offenbar kein Detail auslassen wollte und zum Teil minutiös vom Ablauf einiger Tage berichtet. Interessant für alle, die sehr an Politik/Zeitgeschichte selbst interessiert sind, ansonsten eher nicht zu empfehlen.
