the first one hundred and fifty pages move with such urgency. you’re immediately thrown into a world set in motion. and where today the duke’s death would perhaps be the climax of the first book, dune throws you into the deep and this death is simply part of the premise. yet the beauty of this setup and the intrigue Herbert successfully creates looses all its momentum in the absolute slog the middle 300 pages presents. i wish we got more of paul in the desert. particularly navigating his relationships with women. the last one hundred pages felt rushed beyond belief. pacing issues aside— this book is full of wisdom, watching paul wrestle with the fate he knows he is resigned to is so compelling. a hero, reluctant not because of disbelief in himself or some insecurity, but because he sees what his heroism will create! Dune is the source text fr. but imperfect fr.

A friend described this as politics in space and that was bang on. I read a lot of it while tired at night and I think I missed some of the details of the machinations.
I did enjoy the journey everyone went on. Chani feels a bit hard done by and not much of a person? I hope they gave Zendaya more in the film! Also Paul is slightly annoying. He seems to lean into the whole coming of age prophet thing quite early on.

I did not like this book for all the hype it's received. It was confusing for one. The author calls the characters by their last names and the characters call each other by their first names so it took me a third of the book to finally figure out who everyone was and by that time they were all dead pretty much. This book made me sad and I had to force myself to read it.
He did have cool science fiction ideas so I'll give him that. But that's it.
