Dune surprised me by how good it is. I'd put off reading it for years because it just seemed...meh. Frank Herbert can construct a well-turned out sentence, however, and the world building he's done in Dune is as good or better than Tolkien. I especially like the recognition that women possess philosophical, scientific, and warrior prowess, and that of the two Bene societies, the female Bene Gesserit society focuses on turning out politicians while the male Bene Tleilax society is focused on abstract mathematics. There are significant flaws in the writing, however; the protagonist is male and of the nobility, and there are stereotypical male-female spheres of influence that pervade Herbert's imagination and thus his writing. The women in the story occupy supporting roles only. Chani has zero character development, a wasted opportunity. I did not like the portrayal of Baron Harkonnen as gay; this villainizes queer folk, and I strongly mislike that Herbert allowed himself to lean on a tired trope. That said, the book is a product of its time. Researched in 1959, and written in serial starting in 1963, then published in book form in 1965, the book reflects gender roles typical of its era. Herbert's wife, however, became the family's breadwinner in the early 1960s while Herbert focused on writing, and this thrust shows up in Dune in many positive ways. Dune was a great read. I enjoyed the story and the setting, both are imaginative and page-turning. I recommend the audiobook. The narrator pronounces all the hard-to-pronounce terms specific to the setting.

Posso descriverlo solo come un Capolavoro, con la c maiuscola.
Sono sbalordita dalla complessità dell'universo che questo autore è riuscito a creare, dalla sua coerenza in cui nessun dettaglio è trascurato. L'intreccio è avvincente, i personaggi fantastici. L'ho amato dalla prima all'ultima pagina.
