Obviously the standard in sci-fi, so things are retroactively tropey. BUT it's the Lisan-al Gaib

Somehow had it in my head that this would be a dense read, but it wasn't at all. I set myself the challenge of reading this just after seeing the first and before seeing the second film, and I managed to do that quite easily in two weeks, in spite of it being 800 pages. It doesn't feel like that at all. Description is sparse but effective and evocative, and dialogue is generally very beautifully written. The characters are well-drawn, and the plot moves along like a train. The ideas explored here, the politics, religious issues, prophecies, environmentalism--there's so much stuff. The Fremen are an extraordinary people, and they're the main reason why I want to read more in this series.

In short, astounding book, and one that will stay with me for a while.

An oft-emulated masterpiece. Herbert handstands the fine line between boring exposition and the unexplained, utilizing context to form a "good enough" understanding with the reader until such topics can be thoroughly explored. A writing style sopping with internal monologue explores characters' motivations and demonstrates their competence — "show, don't tell" be damned. Dune is a heavy read that, in practice, feels refreshingly breezy to absorb.
