This read confirms I didn’t understand the movies at all

rip paul muad’dib you would have loved twentyonepilots

I liked it but didn’t necessarily love it… there’s a lot of racist remarks (which I mean it is a product of its time) but even then I feel like the book could be revised to exclude that. In my opinion, it’s not central to the storyline at all so why not remove it.
Additionally, there were some story elements that I feel like could have been cleaned up. Other than those things, props to Herbert for making an iconic sci-fi story that (for the most part) held up.
Also I highly recommend the audiobook! Especially with a full cast.

Reading Dune in the today is a rare look into the political philosophies of a bygone era, and for that alone is probably worth a read. It is difficult to imagine a popular American work of fiction depicting freedom fighters and "jihad" as synonymous until its staring at you in the face.

Beyond the historical perspective, the space fantasy writing is foundational. Politics, spies, and action while important to the totality of the epic is not what finally sticks with me years later. Instead, its the ability to write a messiah character so self conflicted. I don't think I've seen anything like it since. I am worried later books may not satisfy the conflict set up here, but damn whats here is captivating.

This book is an all time classic all the praise I could give has already been repeated many times. The biggest issue I noticed while reading is Chani’s character. The book heavily deals with gender roles in its subject matter. While the societies potrayed in this book are patriarchal, there are subversions of expected gender norms in the autonomy held by the female characters in the book such as in Jessica and Alia. Chani however, is an empty character that’s main purpose is to be Paul’s romantic interest and she simply follows him around and worships the ground he walks on from the start. This issue is a small blemish on an otherwise near perfect story.
