Oh, the highs and lows of this book. It is sometimes good. It is sometimes okay. It is briefly terrible, and the good does make up for it. I don't regret reading it, but I did build it up a bit too much in my mind.

The most interesting part is wondering why Frank Herbert would write certain things certain ways and extrapolating on what he's built. I imagine the latter is true for many people and that that explains the popularity of Dune.

And I learned so much about myself as a reader. I learned that I’d rather be bored than exposed to (some) really bad (to me) writing.

I got the distinct feeling that Herbert did not read much fiction for the majority of his life as I read, but I waited for a long time to research his background. I feel like I was correct and I don’t believe him if he says otherwise!

A sci-fi classic! The story is complex and well fleshed out and includes many great twist on the genre. The world of dune feels very detailed, and almost alive because of the attention to detail. The only thing bringing this down from perfection is all the new elements and words thrown at the beginning of it can make it a little hard to get into the book at the start. Apart from this small criticism, this book is great!

I’m trying really hard to not buy new e-books right now, and I knew that even if I borrowed an e-book via Libby, I’d probably not finish Dune within two weeks since I mostly read before bedtime. Enter, the audiobook. This is maybe my fourth audiobook overall and I found myself excited to drive to work in the morning so I could listen. I whizzed through this in a week.

That’s not really a review of the book, of course, because I don’t think I have anything groundbreaking to add, and more than anything, I was pleasantly surprised by how I enjoyed the text this way.

I am sure I will get a lot of flak for this, but I disliked this book so much I didn't even finish it, which is something I rarely do (That is my definition of one-star worthy).

The sad part is that Dune was promising at the start (with the exception of those annoying passages at the head of each chapter). There was also a really interesting scene where one character poisons another in a very unique way, which piqued my interest. But then the characters wind up in the desert. At this point, the story just up and died (I am not going to make any dying of thirst in the desert jokes, although I am tempted).

The story was such that I had stopped caring about all the characters by that point, and that was when I realized that there was no point in reading any further.

I may try to go back and reread this novel at some point, because enough people have told me it is good (and there are certainly enough sequels for me to realize somebody must like these books). But I am going to have to be really bored and without anything else to read. We'll see. I will update this review if I do.
