Good but not one of the greats

This was a great story with a lot of promise. However, the ending fell flat to me. A free cliff hangers. A lot of repetition in the middle. At least its a fast read.

Surprisingly fun. I consumed this book reading it in a day. I loved every bit of it pushing the needle to 5 stars for me

This was a quick read that turned out to be a better than average sort of mystery/thriller. There is some clever dialogue which isn’t something you always find in a Patterson book. Like this:

“His wife, Amanda, who’d been his college sweetheart, had gotten him to go to Betty Ford, in Rancho Mirage. Somehow, through it all, she had stayed with him. Having now been in his presence for an hour, I thought it seemed like a love that passed all understanding.”

And this: “Then she asked if I had any comment for the story about Jack and me that would run in the print edition. “Just one. Here goes: ‘My only regret was when I discovered that I hadn’t broken my brother’s nose.’”

One review described ‘predictable plot twists and superficial characters’ and that feels generous? But here’s the thing - sometimes that’s what I want, especially in an audio book.

Meh. I don't agree that the Wolfs are "a family that makes Succession's Roys and Yellowstone’s Duttons seem tame". Goodreads makes it sound like the story is mainly about Detective Cantor, but most of the story is from Jenny's point of view. After her father's maybe murder, Jenny Wolf finds out at the will reading that Joe Wolf left her in charge of his pro football team, newspaper, and the family company. No one in her family was expecting this least of all Jenny. Her brothers Jack and Danny immediately make moves to make Jenny give it all up. Her brother Thomas supports all of Jenny's decisions, until he "jumps" from his office. Detective Ben Cantor is investigating both deaths. What will Jenny's enemies do to get what they want, and what will Jenny do to keep what is hers? #Edelweiss+

Up to a point…
The book was good, up to a point.
I’m not a fan of the deus ex machina ending.

I enjoyed another collaboration of James Patterson and Mike Lupica and liked it, so I though I would try this one. House of Wolves refers to the Wolf family, patriarch Joe and his four children, sons Jack, Danny, Thomas, and daughter Jenny. Joe Wolf owns the pro football team and newspaper in San Francisco. The sons work in some capacity for their father, but daughter Jenny is a high school football coach and renounced the family years ago. I definitely got "Succession" vibes through out the book, but that's not a bad thing. When Joe dies under suspicious circumstances and his final will and testament is read, things get very complicated and dangerous as there are characters who want that pro football team very much and siblings that have no love lost between them.
