I continue to enjoy Kadrey's storytelling, although at this point the plethora of interdimensional gods is wearing thin. Based on the ending of the book, it seemed to me that Kadrey was ready to move on as well.

Mixed feelings here.

You have to like, "I don't want wisdom. I want a bazooka" or "we could have been playing badminton with a baked ham for all he cared."

You have to admire the constantly increasing scope of Stark's adventures, and that despite being almost a cartoon character he is still showing a tiny bit of emotional development.

You have to recognize the challenge for Kadrey to bring the series to a major turning point, if not an end. There are a lot of things to wrap up, a lot of characters to account for.

I will, however, be glad to see the end of the motorcycle, the Aqua Regia and the Maledictions. Couldn't help thinking they were just there to pad out the word count.

The ending, as others have noted, felt like the kind you get when the author realizes that he's only got a thousand words left and has to wrap it up.

Kadrey tells and shows us at great length what a powerful badass (Saint Nick) is, and at the end he is taken out by
Spoiler an ordinary pistol.
. OK, we have been shown that Stark himself is technically vulnerable that way too - but still.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't think we are ever told
Spoilerwho was poisoning Candy or who possessed Wells in the big end scene.

Still a worthy part of the series.

At the very end, Stark has a new career. I wondered briefly ... Stark, as in Richard Stark, pen name under which Donald Westlake wrote the great "Parker" series ... and James Stark is more or less Parker with magic weapons. He could have a worse future.

This took me a little longer to read than some of the others, but that's not because it wasn't good. There might've been a little anxiety mixed in, maybe a 1000 or so to drive, jobs to start (jobs to LOSE). Anyway, The Getaway God succeeds where others in the Sandman Slim series fail. It brings back a classic villain, a ultra-cool anime girl, and Stark at his best--acting human, though barely so.

Maybe I'll review it later, but right now. Um, not right now.

This is my favorite of the series so far and if you were to just jump into the series randomly, this would be a good place to start. The author does a great job giving enough backstory reminders so that you can read the story without the first 5, which were a little rougher. I was not expecting the direction this installment took and it was cool to see things from the previous installments tie together into a larger plot. I like the way the Sandman Slim universe is heading!

This was fun. It could be the end of the series but doesn't have to be. It's not a bad stopping place if Kadrey is tired of writing these characters. But, it can continue, too.

It amused me that in the middle of a drought in California, the book is set in a monsoon in LA.

The world/magic was the best thing about the series. It had a large universe filled with interesting groups and magic, much of it based in Christian myth.

Characters were ok. Believable as people, though the main character was a huge "bad boy with a heart of gold" stereotype.

Still a lot of fun, even if not so much for James Stark. Thank goodness a certain popular main character is not actually, fully gone, as was suggested in these last few pages. That made me genuinely concerned. Kadrey wouldn't do that, would he??

No, no he would not. Goody. Bring on Book #7!

Elder Gods, The Judeao-Christian God with a split personality and multiple bodies, rain of blood, hellhounds, the end of the world and Christmas. Join the roller coaster ride that is Sandman Slim.

The pacing is excellent, and the development of character relationships is lovely. I ship the main couple so hard. Even the frenemies are fantastic. Another great edition to the series.
