English :
I don't have a very high level of French or much experience with French literature, so I was really nervous when I had to read this book for a stylistics class. Flaubert's style is quite indirect and ambiguous. There were a lot of subtleties that I didn't understand and many that I didn't even notice. Despite this, I think the message of this work is deeply touching and valuable, particularly during a time when it is more and more difficult to make and keep real connections with others. Human connection is a simple need, but it's incredibly powerful. I appreciate Un cœur simple for reminding me of this.
As a side note, it takes quite a while into the story for the plot mentioned in the blurb to even happen. The perroquet doesn't even show up until like page 70 out of 95. I understand why. I think the build-up was important to the overall story. That said, I did spend a lot of this book wondering if I had read the description correctly.

I loved this simple story of life. Félicité seemed to live and feel each moment of her life. Her life is simple and very real on so many levels. It is a beautiful story.

Penguin put out a whole series of these tiny paperbacks. I ended up reading this one mostly because I was enjoying Julian Barnes' novel Flaubert's Parrot, which is about Flaubert's life, the nature of history, and the parrot Flaubert used for the one in this story. The story itself is a quite beautiful study of devotion taken to absurd, mad ends.
