I absolutely loved this story! And the best part is that I only bought it for the cover. I recommend this book to everyone. It's worth reading. It's one of my favorites now...

I've read this a total of 3 times i think, each time liking it more than the last time! I'd definitely recommend it to younger children though.

Great book for the 10-13 year old crowd. Time travel, clever kids, and the tarman is a great bad guy.
slow-paced

Honestly, I would've totally adored this book had I been younger, like in grade school. Despite that, I did enjoy this even without the prose and plot development I've come to expect from books. And if you know a youngin' who likes history, or sci-fi, or both, they should give this one a go.
The best part about this was the wide variety of characters, from detective inspectors to 18th century mob bosses to reformed thieves to NASA scientists to the King and Queen of England to two kids who are in way over their heads. The interaction of Kate and Peter with the 1700s folk made me smile (though I wasn't sure it was a good idea for them to tell almost everyone they met that they were from the future). And the 18th century was depicted honestly, which was interesting because it's tempting to skim over the slim and muck and stink, and especially the prisons. There was a great blend of the rich half of the century and the dirt poor.
Time travel in this book was a little screwy--they had been gone the same amount of time in both the twenty-first and 18th centuries--and not very well explained, and I really don't expect it to get any better in the sequential books. So a little bit of suspension of disbelief is required.
Overall, this is something to read if you want something goofy, light, not requiring a lot of brain power, and not something you really want to analyze. It's just a fun little ride through time.

It was fun, but it was kind of mopy. Also, the character, Kate, irritated me. I liked the Tin Man, but I still don't believe in his life story... still sounds like a urban legend to me. I'm not sure if I'll keep reading the series. Overall: Interesting concept but bad set-up.

A 2008 Beehive Award nominee. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

I remember it being boring as a kid, and I still find it pretty boring now.
