the house in the cerulean sea was a charming read focusing on linus baker, a caseworker for orphanages with magical children, and his time with an orphanage of six children and their caretakers.

the characters were really cute. chauncey has my whole heart <3 but yeah it’s a book of fluff. the main conflict is resolved pretty quickly towards the end and i think a couple of the “big reveals” or climactic moments could have been oomph-ed up a bit more. it was very nice to read though. it’s an optimistic happy ending read if you need one. you don’t really have to think too hard while reading

i did like that the queer love story wasn’t the main plot line, rather focusing on newfound familial love and life in general. it didn’t feel forced. i also don’t normally prefer fantasy, but this was the exact right amount of fantasy for non-fantasy readers

but do have to knock it down a bit for the slight white savior-esque narrative (even if it isn’t ill-intentioned)

would recommend, wouldn’t reread

This is not my typical genre at all but I’m so glad I gave it a chance! I couldn’t have loved it more! The story, the characters, the writing, it was all great. The narrator of the audiobook was perfect and gave real life to the characters. Highly recommend!
