I started to grew concerned about who the pairing was as I read and I googled and confirmed. No way am reading that.
Reading Sha Po Lang right after the first volume of Guardian I found out it didn't live up to my expectations - not yet at least.
As much as I enjoyed the premise and even the worldbuilding, I had a few issues with this book. First of all, despite being historically accurate and typical, the racism is quite glaring - as it's only the first volume I have no idea if there will be an attempt to subvert the racist tropes and narratives that this plays with.
At times I felt that the story was a bit too rushed and I wished it would have more lyrical parts: like this it felt slightly chaotic.
On the other hand I feel like the steampunk setting is interesting and fun and I like the dynamic between the two main characters.
