Such an excellent read! I loved the characters and the story, and the steampunk setting is so badass. The political intrigue was also very intriguing.
I did find it a tad off-putting that the main ship seems to be between the MC (Cheng Geng) and his godfather, which is a bit weird. And Cheng Geng was underage this whole book (altho nothing inappropriate happened). But I must admit that I enjoyed Cheng Geng's pining and longing for someone he shouldn't want, that shit is 👌
There is also some fatphobia and transphobia towards a side character who is chubby and a side character who was raised as a girl. Both characters are iconic tho and do play a positive role in the plot.
Anyways, I'm excited to dive into Vol. 2 and see what happens next!

Upon a reread: I liked this a lot better the second time around! Perhaps I’m more familiar with the genre, or read it a little slower and caught more nuance. The politics intrigued me a lot more this time around, I’m definitely ready to dive into this series fully.
First read:
I enjoyed this, don’t get me wrong, but I think maybe the world building is a little off putting for me. And I love steampunk! This should be all I’ve ever wanted! But i’m rather confused and irritated with the whole is he or is he not blind/deaf — that seems like it’s going to come biting at some point soon, but he won’t talk to Chang Geng about it. The relationship right now is a whole lot of avoidance from both sides, and it’s more irritating to me than anything else. And Chang Geng is not telling anyone about his foster mother or his poison… bunch of dummies I tell you. But I am curious about the beserker aspect of it I’m picking up on, and I do want to see where the plot goes with the border battles and political turmoil.
Anyways! I’m going to give vol 2 a try when it comes out because I did like it, but i’m not army for this.
