Phew... Dennis Lehane described very neatly about how ugly society can be. He in his own incredible writing style described how law can be misused. How hero can be villains and villains can sometimes be hero's. By the end of the book i really liked the bad guys and disliked what the supposedly good guys did. Well He made me CRINGE at some of the situations created or scenes. At one point i was shuddering literally. The child molesters.... Writers describe molesters in their own way but in this book i really felt lucky to be not one those children. This book is a thriller.. This book showed the ugly side of law and at the same time made heroes out of them. I guess it depends upon one how you take it.

This book started with a missing child and two Private investigators were appointed by the kids aunt to sole the case or bring back the kid. This book is all from one Private Investigator (Patrick) point of view and The story develops and by the mid way you will think its all done but then its just 50% of the book. Its a beautiful book. I felt its like a Ugly Truth. Only because we don't know does not mean it is not happening. I should warn you. This book is pretty disturbing but you will love it. Nothing happens as you expect. The people whom you like gets killed. People whom you were rooting for gets separated. Hmmm Do not miss this one.

The more time that has passed I found that I liked the book more and more.

I'd give it a half-star more than two if I could--I did like the characters and the writing, but I had a couple of issues with a few plot points.

Plodding pacing and a so-so plotline that seems overwrought a good portion of the time serve to give this the lowest spot in the Kenzie/Gennaro series (at least of the first four, I haven't read the last one yet). In adapting it for the screen, Ben Affleck made a wise choice in jettisoning several of the unnecessary plot threads. This is the rare case where the movie is superior to the book.

The story is really intriguing and the end is haunting. Knock you out of breath kind of haunting.
