It's hard to see how Jane is going to get out of this alive. I knew book 2 wasn't the end of the story so was not too surprised by the ending. Book 2 I thought was way better than book 1 which I thought dragged quite a bit but the author kept book 2 moving along quite well. I will be looking for Book 3 as I have to know how she manages to get out of this with her life. Jane is a badass woman and I always love stories based on that theme.

So it seems I'm reading these in reverse order (3, 2, 1) . BUT in my defense I saw this one on super duper sale and couldn't leave it in the store.
Jane is a good character. She is smart, strong and fights for what's right.
This one was action packed as she goes after the very powerful men in charge of the organization that is getting citizens to kill themselves and others. Not just any citizens. Citizens who have the promise of making some sort of change.
That's not all they're doing. But one of the victims is Jane's husband. Her young son was also threatened. She can't take the risk that they will follow through on those threats.
Meanwhile in another pov, a school teacher of kids with special needs (Cora) has committed a crime that is very much against her nature. The police chief in the town where she lived (Luther) sets out to see what prompted her to do it. Knowing her for 20 years, he knows something isn't right.
Then their paths cross.
I did think the very end was anticlimactic. The chapters leading up to it were tense. Good use of chimpanzees too.
I'm wondering if Dean Koontz has been around teenagers and younger adults recently? I found the dialogue between Luthers daughters Twyla and Jolie unrealistic and dated. Almost like they were in a sitcom on the 80's.
At any rate, can't wait to read the first one!

A thrill a minute read.

This is a really great sequel to the Silent Corner. To be honest I was not blown away by the first Jane Hawk book, but after reading the Whispering Room I find myself itching in anticipation for the finale. I found myself putting aside any preconceptions and getting sucked into a narration that kept up the amazing pace of the first book whilst adding in a few great characters and emotional side stories.

Thanks NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for a review copy.
Oh, and thank you Dean Koontz for a great read!

3.5 When I read the first book, I didn't realize this is a 5-book series. I thought it was 3 total, and this one is sooooo looooong. I'm hoping the rest of the series isn't a slog. Koontz really dragged out events in this book that would have had more tension and excitement had he tightened it up, especially the story arc involving the sheriff's family. But overall, it is still an interesting story with good characters. I just don't know how much I care about the outcome if it's going to take me three more books to get there. I'm sure I'll get to them all, but he needs to step it up in the next book, or I'm just googling spoilers to see how this all wraps up.
