Jack Bruce's 'Things We Like' rather than the Mahavishnu Orchestra, introduced me to John Mclaughlin. I knew he played with several different Bands (Graham Bond) and Musicians (Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Graham Bond, Miles Davis, & etc...), but had little idea of his early work and the vibrant 60's British Jazz Scene.
This book provides loads of historical/period information (see the included Bibliography) and personal - his and other players - reminisces.
The book only covers John McLaughlin's early work up to and including Mahavishnu Orchestra 1 and 2 and Shakti - I wish there was more of McLaughlin's later work, but given this book only includes his work through 75, there cannot be. Wonderful history of British 60's Jazz Scene, the Mods, Pop, and Session Work and Sessions Players.
The Appendices seem repetitive, but of interest to me nonetheless.
