A violent tale through the eyes of a young boy.
Set in Calabria in the summer of 1978, the story follows a young boy in a small village community as his life is changed forever when he accidentally discovers a criminal secret that his family and close neighbours harbour. For Ammaniti however, having a child as a narrator is no excuse to overanalyse or explain everything in detail with annoying naivety. The narrative is not only gripping from the very first pages but also a masterclass in exposing an adult world that is harsh and brutal as well as often incomprehensible to a child. Published in 2003, it made my reading list by chance as I wanted to read a story set in Italy but I cannot recommend it enough!

la scrittura di Ammaniti mi ha coinvolta al 100% nella lettura del romanzo, con le sue descrizioni che ti fanno immergere nella storia.
la storia mi è piaciuta molto e il finale mi ha spezzato il cuore

Strange book but entertaining!

SHIT. had to read for year 10 english with miss saunders and it SUCKED. it was so gross and uncomfortable and i was under such pressure to read it because i forgot to read it over the holidays and was quickly reading it during class. DISGUSTING book. YUCK. didn't enjoy it at all. i even kinda think i could enjoy some of it on reread but it was so GROSS.

This was a short little book, but it's darn good. I love those stories that deal with that tragic discovery of mid-childhood: adults can be pretty crummy.
