Ava Reid knows how to write a mood. This was dark and twisted, with some parts that were a bit hard to read (Papa’s eating habits) I had no idea what I was getting into ‘Oh a witch that struggles with two worlds? Cool!’ yeah…. it’s a lot more than that. This was like the original Grimms’ fairy tales cranked to eleven.

this book was really good and Inliked it a lot better than the wolf and the woodsman— not that I disliked wolf and the woodsman. but also, it’s a very different experience to read something in a physical book versus listening to it. woodsman I listened to on audible and juniper and thorn i had a physical copy of. super good book— almost a five star but i can’t quite say it was perfect. it was pretty crazy that marlinchen ended up being the monster honestly but I like didn’t really feel like Sevas and her were like truly in love. But i guess it wasn’t supposed to be a romance it was supposed to be horror. i am so glad she finally got away from her dad and tbh i was expecting a horribly tragic ending so i’m happy it was a nice ending. i don’t really know why she had to kill undine though or like how the monster stuff even really worked. Idk it was really good though and creative. I’ve never read the original brothers grimm story so I wonder how similar this is to that super good. honestly fuck it i’m gonna give it five stars why not. haven’t read a book like that probably ever so I can see why people like it. It definitely is very atmospheric tragic fairytale vibes. A little weird and idk if it’s 4.75 or 5 but damnit i’ve got to commit to enjoying some things so it gets a 5!

I am majorly concerned by the fact that every time I've tried to buy this book I've been pointed to the children's section. This is not a reflection on the book, but now that I've read it I cannot emphasise enough how much this book is NOT for children.
It was DEEPLY disturbing throughout in a way that I'm finding very difficult to describe, I think because there was such an undercurrent of sexual violence on literally every page. There are a number of very graphic sex scenes and SO MANY nipples and like, not in a good way. Huge amounts of the plot hinge on detailed childhood abuse and trauma, as well as violence, cannibalism and disordered eating.
Personally, I thought this book was incredibly well written in a way that made me horribly intrigued. I couldn't stop reading, the same way you can't stop looking at a car crash. I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a book that really gets under your skin, I think I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.

This reads exactly like a dark fairytale.
