rip Susan Sontag avresti adorato Bello Figo e Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Rating: 8/10
This was interesting. While I had a vague idea of what Camp is, I liked reading in more detail about it and why it's important from a cultural/aesthetic point of view. It was also interesting to read more about Camp in history. On one hand, it's obvious that the Gothic novel is the original Camp, but the idea of Art Nouveau (which I love) as Camp surprised me. Sontag's reasoning for it makes total sense, though.
Really good insights, and I'm very glad I read it.

Google was my friend while reading this essay on Camp. I was not familiar with at least half the references. My to read list has lengthened. I suspect I am the complete antithesis of Camp. But Camp is becoming so prevalent that maybe one day I will be the one noticed for being avant-garde. :)
I have wanted to read this since I took a class on women and democracy in US History. It's very readable and it's not pretentious at all, which makes sense considering the topic in some ways. I enjoyed it and learned a lot!
"Camp taste is a kind of love, love for human nature. It relishes, rather than judges, the little triumphs and awkward intensities of "character." . . . Camp taste identifies with what it is enjoying. People who share this sensibility are not laughing at the thing they label as "a camp," they're enjoying it. Camp is a tender feeling."
