Notes on Camp

Susan Sontag

3.9 AVERAGE

When they made this the theme of the met gala they already defeated the purpose

Exam season is starting and I have so much coursework due so naturally I, a computer science student, am reading an essay on camp

I don't agree with all Sontag says here - I don't think camp is inherently non-political - but it was a solid read and a decent answer to "Hey are these things I've been calling camp actually camp?"

.

Camp taste is a kind of love, love for human nature. It relishes, rather than judges, the little triumphs and awkward intensities of 'character'.

Two essays by Susan Sontag that discuss aspects of modern culture, particularly the relationship between 'high' and 'low' culture.

The first, Notes on 'Camp', is interesting enough and there are a few in her notes, but it shows its age, I think (would anyone today argue that Camp is apolitical?).

But for me, it's the second essay One Culture and the New Sensibility that is most thought-provoking and still quite relevant. It made me rethink my relationship with modern art and I think it could do the same for many people I know. I'll be recommending it far and wide!

kind of silly and disorganized yet funny and made sense by the end. LOL. i definitely get the vibe even if it's something i... can't quite put into words... all i can think about now is the met gala from a few years back and it is so funny to compare. would read more susan sontag in the future!

Look at the pictures from the “Notes on Camp” theme Met Gala. That’s camp. You don’t need to read an 80-page essay on it.

Really boring.

Found part 1, notes on camp, much more enlightening than the part 2. Disagree with Sontag's belief that Camp is apolitical or politically neutral, even removed from the affinity Homosexuals have for camp style -- and are often put in the same boat where style is concerned.
