almost did what it came to do since the second act does become sort of superficial and purely semantically driven
she described camp is the most uncamp way possible

"And one cheats oneself, as a human being, if one has respect only for the style of high culture, whatever else one may do or feel on the sly" (Notes on 'Camp', 23).
Notes on 'Camp' (4.5 stars)
Despite my formation in fine and literary arts, I am an avid consumer of 'low' culture. I am a clinger to the 2010s romcoms, the odd TikTok new adult books, and the mass printed postcards I pin to my walls. I would be lying to myself if I claimed that anything I do is camp. I am ordinary to my bones, that is not up for discussion. To be 'camp', one has to overdo with the ambition of greatness; something I have no patience for, just appreciation. But this? What an excellent analysis of what something is at its essence. Also, what an excellent demonstration that the 2019 Met Gala was a flop—true camp is never intentional.
One Culture and the New Sensibility (5 stars)
Now this exceeded any expectations I had. As someone literally torn between sciences and the arts (physics and French major, let's goooo), I often hear that you can not exceed in both. You have to choose one culture to belong to, otherwise, you are neither. I think this comes from a place of unawareness, as sciences stem from arts as much as arts stem from the sciences. An experiment is, indeed, an art form. As Sontag says, "The problem of 'two cultures', in short, rests upon an uneducated, uncontemporary grasp of our present cultural situation"(45). This is a beautiful portrait of interdependence of the two cultures, and how the two function together as one. An extraordinary work.
