Pardon my French but what a load of shit... The only reason it’s not one star is because it did make me think of some things in ways that I hadn’t previously thought of.

The second essay was so difficult to get through but I forced myself to finish it because I new that if I put this book down, I wouldn’t pick it back up again.

I’m really disappointed as I thought I would enjoy this read.

I didn't have any particular thoughts on Camp before I read this and now I have some perspective but would I say I understand Camp? No. Do I understand it better? Yes. But I did feel there was a lot of repetition within this very short non-essay essay but that's a criticism I have for literary theory texts in general. I found the comparison of artistic-literary culture and scientific culture more interesting. However, it felt dated in its perspective, it's a lens into the understanding of its era. I saw this in the second essay more since I don't have any strong feelings on Camp. Especially when it comes to discussing the specialized nature of art or even what is considered as art that extends beyond the literary world - the creation of mass-produced 'art' has now been given to the masses with the proliferation of the internet in a way that wasn't possible in the 60s when this was written.

It would be interesting to see an updated critique that picks up the same topics and talks about what Camp and art culture mean in the 2020s.

Made a couple interesting points but overall just found it wonky and unnecessary

"Camp" als unübersetzbares Adjektiv, das besondere Qualitäten, insbesondere von Kunstwerken beschreibt. Ein Must-read für Opernliebhaber: "Bellini is camp, Wagner is not."

thanks for verifying that the rocky horror picture show is indeed the best piece of Camp canon ever to exist

Love love love! I’m embracing camp wholeheartedly now and also enjoyed the second essay as an English literature student very helpful in critiquing the arts. Very Readable and won’t take long. Pioneering work and essential to begin engaging in this discussion
