A PAIN TO GET THROUGH,
I have an in depth explanation if camp, but honestly more confusion than anything after reading, so many big words! My brain hurts.
She talks about camp being so awful it's good, maybe that's what she is going for with this book.
TAKEAWAYS:
- "Camp is its love of the unnatrual: of artifce and exxageratoin, a private code, a badge of identity even, among small urban cliques.
- Camp art is often decorative, emphasizing texture, sensuous surface and style at the expense of content.
- The paris metro entrances are shaped like orchid stalks, okay work paris metro
- I liked how she described how we are more able to enjoy fantasies that arent our own, like how at the time a popular song might be annoying but years later when youre removed from it you love it
-Things are campy not when they become old- but whn we become less involved in them, and can enjoy, instead of being frustrated by
- The whole point of camp is to dethrone the serious,Camp is playful. One can be serious about the frivolous, and frivolous about the serious
-Sincerity can be intellectual narrowness - INTRIGUING
- Camp is a good taste of the bad taste. This discovery can be liberating. It makes the man of good taste cheerful, where before he ran the risk of being chronically frustrated. It is good for the digestion
- Camp finds the successes in certain passionate failures
- The most interesting and creative art of our time is not open to the generally educated; it demands special effort; it speaks a specialised language YEAH LIKE THIS BOOK SUSAN

The second essay takes a bit more effort to read if you don’t have a background in the topic in my opinion. However, I am happy to reread to really understand the topic as I loved it!
All I know Is that now I want a Tiffany lamp and an Aubrey Beardsley print on my wall. Think this says it all.
Forgot I read this earlier in the year, but it counts!!!
Eh, it's interesting to read as its THE text on 'Camp', but I really think Sontag's definitions of the concept are limited. I did enjoy it's structure, and found it quite humorous at times, but there exists far more nuanced and established publications on the topic.
Do recommend the read though, if only to see how many celeb's misinterpreted the theme for the Met Gala!

*Camp sees everything in quotation marks.
It's not a lamp, but a "lamp"; not a woman, but a "woman". To perceive Camp in objects and persons is to understand Being-as-Playing-a-Role. It is the farthest extension, in sensibility, of the metaphor of life as theater.*

interesting simplification and breakdown of camp + the new sensibilities; of course i couldn't help but think about how these ideas apply to 21st century society and feeling a little dejected about the rise of AI art and anti-intellectualism in art
