notes on camp gets flack for being both too vague and too specific. while i think that's valid, i also think that defining any cultural concept is challenging on a good day.

that said, i don't think that sontag is as vague as you think. using examples in film, music, the performing arts, design etc. she elucidates what "camp" really is: performative, theatrical, stylised, vapid, naïve, passionate, amongst so many other things.

importantly i believe a sense for camp evolves as our common understanding of art does, evidenced by the fact that a lot of the cultural references sontag cites are much bygone for contemporary readers, which is perhaps why many may not be able to see what it is that sontag is showing us.

thus, i await a contemporary reimagining of notes on camp, as timeless and spectacular as the original is.
