I’ve been wanting to read Notes on Camp ever since the Met Gala’s Camp theme, and I’m glad I finally got around to it. The book dives deep into what Camp actually is—not about traditional beauty, but about artifice, exaggeration, and stylization. It helped me understand why drag queens, for example, are seen as Camp: it’s not just the fashion or makeup, but the way they perform identity with over-the-top flair and irony.

That said, I did find the essay a bit repetitive, and many of the examples Susan Sontag uses are outdated (understandably, since it was written in the 1960s). That made some parts harder to grasp. Having some background knowledge or modern references in mind definitely helps when reading this.

If you’re interested, I recommend listening to the audiobook—it’s free on YouTube and much easier to get through that way.
