Achingly romantic. I am utterly mesmerized every time I read this even after so many years.
Griffin and Sabine may well have been a series of books that I happened to encounter at the right time of my life. Though the number of times I have re-read them speaks to their ability to hold up over time. This is not just an epistolary tale, this book is a tactile experience, in which the reader has the voyeuristic thrill of removing someone else's mail from its envelope and reading it. The story tracks the correspondence between Griffin, a London artist, and Sabine, who he has never met, but who knows details of his life that no one could. Griffin sets out in search of Sabine, and over the course of the three books questions his own sanity.
These books are so fun. I've been meaning to do a re-read for a while.
These books are so cool. They follow the relationship of two people in letters, but unlike a normal epistolary book, it is comprised of artistic postcards and letters that can be pulled out of painted envelopes. It is just as much a quirky story as it is a book filled with great art.
