Emily Henry is the queen of the miscommunication trope. And while it’s definitely not my favorite trope, she does it so well that I can put my feelings aside and enjoy the way it all unfolds. Alex might have just taken the number one spot for my Emily Henry boyfriends, a role I thought would stay Gus’s forever. I loved the relationship between Poppy and Alex. Them falling for each other made sense and was clearly so much more than just physical appearance, something not many romance authors seem to be able to convey. Emily Henry does that flawlessly here. Alex and Poppy were the perfect opposites that made sense (no matter what Alex tried to say).
My only critiques are one: while I understood what upset Alex in the airport, I didn’t think it was entirely fair. He was as much to blame for the missed opportunities throughout the years between them. He never told her how he felt or his willingness to give it all up for her so while I emphasized with him, I didn’t like seeing Poppy taking on the responsibility for everything that played out between them. And two: the reason they didn’t speak for two years felt very immature. As close as these two were, I just don’t buy not being able to talk about what happened and instead forgoing speaking at all. I get it’s the miscommunication trope formula but that felt like an overkill.
But even with that frustration I still loved this book and can’t wait to see it on the big screen!

Okay after the aggressive updates I made on this book, I actually enjoyed the back half of the book way more than the front half. I was like perpetually annoyed by the humor & the annoying dynamic between the characters but yk what i love an angsty romance, sue me!
