Had much potential, but the female protagonist was unnecessarily sexualized in every description of her, which made some passages quite irritating to read.
Moderate: Death, Drug abuse, Self harm, Suicide, Blood, Medical content, Suicide attempt, Murder
I am re-reading books in order to decide about getting rid of books and was almost going to leave this in southern Georgia at the end of this trip I'm on.
I forgot how good it is and found myself on a Greyhound crying as I finished the last 40 pages. I can't get rid of it ever.
'American movies, English books--remember how they all end? The American or the Englishman gets on a plane and leaves. That's it. The camera leaves with him. He looks out of the window at Mombasa or Vietnam or Jakarta, someplace he can now look at through the clouds. The tired hero. A couple of words to the girl beside him. He's going home. So the war, to all purposes, is over. That's enough reality for the West. It's probably the history of the last two hundred years of Western political writing. Go home. Write a book. Hit the circuit.'

Sad, slow, and sort of obvious. I'm glad I read it once, but I will never revisit the world of Anil's Ghost.

i really wanted to love this book. however, it was an incredibly difficult read and not just because of the concepts. it switched between past and present, focusing on different characters, and sometimes the information felt irrelevant and really dragged. however, it did teach me some about the sri lankan civil war, and i did find myself invested in anil and sarath's studies, as well as the backstory of gamini.
Just couldn't get into this. The characters seemed at arms-length.

Hmm... 1.5 stars for me.
This is the last book I read by Ondaatje.
The writing style was so frustrating that it was a struggle to finish this book.
