I so badly want to love this, but it fell flat, for me. The book starts slow, but definitely picks up some pace along the way. Love that it’s set in Sri Lanka. Loved the central character, but other characters felt a little flat to me. Didn’t like the fragmented narratives as it made it quite hard to read. It was beautifully written and I didn’t mind reading it, but the fragmented narrative really put me off. Some fantastic lines, but I don’t think I’ll be re-reading this in the nearest future.

Captivating and deeply moving with vignettes that provide powerful insights into the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. An unforgettable read, but the main character, Anil, fell a bit flat. I never found myself truly connecting with her.

Not what I expected. Beautifully written, of course. Some of the jumps in perspective and little added asides seemed unnecessary.

Brilliant, moving story set amidst the chaos of Sri Lanka's three-way civil war. It focuses on Anil, returning home after 25 years to investigate human rights abuses by the government, but the characters around her are the heart of the story.
