This book was super interesting. It was a crazy, magical, political drama and was quite different from other fantasy books I've read. It wasn't quite a "wow I can't put this down" kind fo book, but it was interesting enough to keep me going and excited to find out what happened next.
However, the balance between the different story-lines felt a bit off to me. I was super interested in the stuff surrounding Mihali, and with Adamat investigation, but less so with his personal stuff, and most of Tamas's and Nila's story. I found Tamas to be an insufferable character, and his sections were only brought back up by the supporting characters within them. I really liked Taniel and his sections, but felt like Vlora (as a character and her own story) were pushed to the side after the first 50 pages. I'm very interested in her--having someone paid to seduce her to break Tamas and Taniel??? Give me the story behind that please! From what I can see, she will be more explored as a character in the second book, but I felt like it was mentioned so early on in the first one that I thought something would come out of it, and it was just pushed to the side.
I did love this book however, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

This book lived up to the hype it was given.
Set during a very colonial feeling world, with your standard type of magic as well as a newer form using gunpowder, this novel brings new air to an almost stale genre.
World building and Character building are done well, and because the story follows four prime characters, it is just enough to keep on track, not to mention that their paths cross enough that they are connected unlike most fantasy these days.
In a time when everyone is either trying to be the next Tolkien, Rowling, Meyers, or whoever is popular, it si nice to have someone else decide to do something familiar enough that it is comfortable and yet new enough to make you feel excited about reading Fantasy again.
As for me, I am a powder mage fan, and you should become one as well.
