jane austen never wrote a bad novel. but out of the five novels i have read this has been my least favorite. this novel is in part a parody of the gothic novels of her time. austen plays around with the themes and tropes of that genre. she specifically references ann radcliffe’s two major gothic novels. it’s a short story with light themes and easily her funniest story. it’s a great parody of gothic novels but you need not have read them to appreciate the humor that austen is going for. austen is having fun in this book. she is not condescending to the genre but probably did find the gothic tropes to be a bit naff which is fair enough.

já no primeiro capítulo, eu achei achei que poderia se tornar um favorito
todos os romances que eu leio, é daqui que eles surgiram, não tenho dúvidas. Henry!!!!!! o mais doce dos heróis, e que alívio essa relação tão sincera, tão direta, tão honesta e sem espaço para duvidar de si
