Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated

LOVED this book. Nellie was always the most fun character on LHOTP, and now we know why--the actress who played her was actually having fun being a b!tch. Arngrim's tone and matter of fact way of looking at her sometimes screwy life is very refreshing in a memoir. Her life was never rainbows and unicorns, but there is no self pity here.
Now to get Laura and Mary's books. . . .

Not only should you read this book, but you should listen to it! This was probably one of the best memoirs I've read recently, not only because it is well-written (she's a great writer) and well-edited, but because it is the best combination of hilarity, jaw-dropping, and moving. There were so many things I didn't know, including her work with AIDS and abused children, her own experience with her brother, her crazy upbringing with her parents, her great friendship with Melissa Gilbert, and so many other revelations. Besides the success the show brought her, I'm willing to bet that getting to play such a screaming b*tch had to be cathartic and healing for what she was going through in her young years. While I probably got more out of this book than someone who's never seen or heard of the show, I think it is still worth reading even if you fall into that latter category. At the very least, you get a glimpse of how Hollywood work(ed/s), what it was like to live through the AIDS epidemic with loved ones, hilarious stories about some of the old greats, and how someone survived being a victim of incest/child abuse through the hard work of therapy and leaning on friends (there are no easy solutions).
Highly recommend this one.

I loved this book! The audiobook is the way to go-she is a hilarious storyteller!
As a huge, huge, HUGE fan of Little House on the Prairie, I found this book to be facinating, funny, and beautiful. Yes, beautiful! Alison's life of abuse and overcoming it to help others is a beautiful thing to see, especially compared to the tragic lives of other child actors. A wonderful book, full of humor and insight on life as well as the Little House set.
As a fan of both the books and the TV series, this was a really amusing book to read. I guess I had never looked into any information on the cast members, they seem very interesting. This book had me laughing so many times.
What a fun book! If you grew up watching Little House on the Prairie, you'll love learning what happened behind the scenes, told through the eyes of the hilarious Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson). Alison Arngrim didn't hold anything back in her autobiography and includes many details about her difficult childhood (she was sexually abused by her brother), her relationship with the cast of Little House (particularly her close friendship with Melissa Gilbert and the shocking coldness of Melissa Sue Anderson who apparently had no use for anyone on set), her publicity-hungry father and some of the stunts he pulled to further her career, her two marriages, and the death of her dear friend and TV husband, Steve Tracy of AIDS. Arngrim has a unique way of examining her experiences and is able to find the irony and humor in many situations. The book was very funny, but also touching as she shared her experiences as an AIDS activist and her work to change sexual abuse laws in our country.
Watching Little House growing up, I loved to hate Nellie Oleson! I now have an even greater appreciation for how she developed this nasty character and became a target for Nellie-haters everywhere!

It's a dishy memoir. I was a Little House fanatic, but the kind whose loyalty to the books precluded me from being able to handle the bizarre flights of the series. This basically does what it says on the label.
I listened to this audiobook for one of my book clubs. I absolutely loved this book narrated by the author! So many great stories about her life and of course her life on Little House On The Prairie.
I found this book very entertaining. I love memoirs, I love learning about people and the things that they’ve been through. I was never a big fan of Little House on the Prairie, it was my older sister’s favorite show so that kind of made it not very attractive to me because she and I are so opposite. But that doesn’t matter, you don’t have to be a fan of someone’s to really enjoy a good memoir and I think this is a good memoir. Alison did not let awful things that happened to her defeat her. She was able to become an advocate for others who suffer instead. Admirable! I listen to it on audio. Read by the author. Trigger: incest.
