Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated
Alison Arngrim
This was a great book written by the actress who played Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie. This was & still is one of my favorite shows on t.v. Nellie was the character that everyone loved to hate. Alison is a great storyteller and hilarious too. I really enjoyed reading her memories of being on one of the most beloved television shows. I also really felt for her in the things she dealt with in her childhood and how the show and character Nellie helped her get out her frustrations and anger, and gave her a safe haven and loving "family" to escape to. It was amazing too how people could not distinguish that she was not the character she played on the show, but she came to accept the recognition that "Nellie Oleson" brought to her. The recognition as that character has also helped her with the many charities she has worked with throughout her life, including AIDS and protecting children from abuse. This book really made me appreciate Nellie and Alison's portrayal of her. As a young child, I hated Nellie and her mean antics, but as I've grown older, I realize that her character made a big part of the show by adding drama and comic relief. After reading this book, I will never look at Nellie Oleson the same again!
No doubt some actors have to pretend that their most famous role is as important to them as it is to fans, but in Arngrim’s case, it’s the honest truth. Our world loves to constantly recycle the pop culture past and put old personalities on reality shows for no good reason, but Confessions will convince you that there’s really something to be learned from the return of Nellie Oleson—that bringing her back, sausage curls and all, isn’t just nostalgic but redemptive.
I grew up watching "Little House on the Prairie" and while I didn't like the character Nellie, I would never consider accosting the actress who played her. The insults and embarrassments she had to endure as a result of that role is mind staggering. Her sense of humor throughout it all is a credit to her ~ she endured so much throughout her young life in both a personal and professional sense. To be able to write about it and lay it all out before us really opened my eyes regarding the world of show business. We as fans either like or dislike a character, we stick with them through thick or thin or we move on since we're a fickle bunch, but... the actors themselves will forever be tied to the character they once portrayed mainly because we the fans won't let them step away from the role.
It becomes a dull chronological slide you just lose interest in.
As someone who grew up watching Little House on the Prairie, naturally I hated Nellie Oleson, so I never thought I'd say this: I AM IN LOVE WITH ALISON ARNGRIM! What a wonderful, charming, warm, funny, strong, brave, and noble human being she is! Come for the fun behind the scenes dirt on everyone's favorite wholesome TV show and stay for the AIDS activism and successful crusade against child abuse loopholes in our government. Seriously, this "prairie bitch" is an amazing person. I loved every bit of her honest, heartbreaking survival story. That she came out the other side happy, caring, and still fighting is a testament to the strength of Nellie. READ THIS BOOK!

I will admit, I do not recall watching a single episode of Little House on the Prairie, but I know about the show.
This memoir is by the woman that played the bratty villain in the show.
This was brilliantly written. It’s heartbreaking, heartwarming and actually funny. It’s reflective and hopeful. ❤️❤️
