This book probably deserves higher than I’m giving it- but I glazed over until 3/4ths of the way after all of the trigger warnings I ignored. Obviously we know that foundation of Medusas story but I wasn’t braced enough for it at the time. It cued my Shrodeingers Rapist  senses on so much the first half I couldn’t really focus for a lot longer than o proud of.

The rest of my feedback is beating a dead horse with everyone else. It’s a misnomer to consider this work focused on Medusa, but not in a bad way.  There is a very wide cast of POV, and the story wanders around a lot of the adjacent lore, and the ruthless way she portrays Perseus and Athene ego wise is super satisfying.

I've never been a Classics girlie but I found this book utterly compelling and charming. Although it took about 60 pages to really grab me, it didn't let go after that.

I didn't know I was longing for a woman-centric take of mythology and one that challenges the notion of monstrosity and evil women, but I was so utterly captivated by Natalie Haynes' fresh and witty take on well-trodden ground.

Of course, many parts are deeply sad, but it's filled with humour, pathos and intention, so I can't really resent it. Also, most of the plot is pretty established...being based on Greek myths and all that.

Perhaps I shouldn’t have read this right after I read Ithaca. I dislike books that start off with character lists, because I’m not flipping back and forth (something that’s impossible to do if you’re reading an audiobook). Also, I thought the depth of the characterization wasn’t as well done as literally all of the other Greek mythology retellings. It’s a fast read, good perspective from Medusa and her sisters, but pretty bland otherwise.
